The construction of these bulbs differ from other ordinary bulbs in a way that these bulbs are filamentless. The area enclosed by this bulb is occupied by an inert gas (xenon). On the passage of electric current, a very high voltage arc is produced which after coming in contact with xenon, produces a very high intensity light. The light emitted by such a process is estimated to be much more powerful and intense than that emitted by any type of halogen bulbs available in the market.
The fact that these D2S bulbs are filamentless gives them an unusually long life-span. Such bulbs fall under the category of High Intensity Discharge bulbs. While an ordinary halogen bulb lasts no more than a year or so, these bulbs are on an average expected to last ten times more than an ordinary halogen bulb. Sometimes manufacturers assure that these bulbs will last as long as the car itself, thereby relieving the customers of the burden of changing bulbs now and then.
The word D2S stands for Discharge second generation shielded. They are commonly used in cars that have projector lenses. The output of these D2S bulbs depends on their temperature rating. The higher is the rating of the bulb, the lower will be the light output. The 5000K and 6000K are very popular among the Xenon lights enthusiasts. While the 5000K produces a brilliant white light, the 6000K emits white light with a bluish hue. Such a hue is perfect for driving at night since they emit light which is very close to natural daylight.
